Toxicology & Environmental metabolomics
The main aim of Toxicology & Environmental metabolomics is the characterization of the human health effects derived from the exposure to environmental contaminants, in the context of the study of the so-called exposome. There are tens of thousands of chemicals in our environment with incomplete toxicological information and more are newly released every day. A better understanding of how environmental pollution may influence in disease occurrence and progression, will allow us to make better decisions either in our personal lives and in the establishment of regulatory policies, with the aim of minimizing the adverse effects on populations. To assess the effects of this exposure, we focus, on the one side, on the determination of environmental contaminants in different environmental matrices using advanced chromatographic and mass spectrometry techniques and, on the other side, on the characterization of the health effects derived from these exposures using metabolomics to determine biomarkers of exposure, disease progression and susceptibility factors.
